VOLUME #11: CITIES UNBUILT!
|
Volume is a project by ARCHIS + AMO + C-LAB + ...
It seems an eternal distinction: sometimes people build, sometimes they destroy. However, since we have a concept of modernity, we also understand that building is very often based on sheer destruction. It is ‘the price of progress’. A new insight is now emerging: much destruction also has an agenda. It has a precision that reminds us of architecture. It has a formal dimension that reminds us of design. In this issue: explore the sinister creativity of Cities Unbuilt.

VOLUME #12: AL MANAKH | |
|
Forecast for global city culture and agenda for design that makes a difference to it.
In cooperation with Moutamarat, Dubai.
Release on the occasion of the International Design Forum In Dubai on 27-29 May 2007 Design worldwide shows a growing ambition not just to shape things or to create form, but also to engage with events, processes and experiences. It has expanded its mandate beyond beauty. But can it also address the burning issues of our time? Dubai attracts global attention for its mind-boggling speed by which it creates a new urban theater. As one of the emerging powers in the Gulf Region, it has put itself on the map as an arena for business and leisure, producing new images of the city today. But can it also be an engine of new ideas to address the burning issues of our time? These two questions interact in Al Manakh, a special publication edited by Volume’s special issue Al Manakh. I – DUBAI GUIDE –by Moutamarat, leads you through current projects, productions, plans and ideas. II - GULF SURVEY- 250 pages survey by AMO, tackles issues around the Gulf and beyond and develops concepts to understand the new urban and social realities in the region. III - GLOBAL AGENDA by Archis focuses on concepts for providing shelter, security, sustainability, fairness and dialogue. Al Manakh will be available as of the first week of July. |

VOLUME #13: AMBITION | |
|
Volume 13 will address the issue of AMBITION. In an era when architects have become cultural celebrities, when their uniqueness as designers and their personalities have become the main focus, we ask if the ambition to become this kind of celebrity is good for the profession. Rather than play into the cult of personality, can the architect use this moment of increased notoriety to be more ambitious about becoming a public intellectual: that is, to be a person who can influence general views, thoughts, values of a wide audience? Given the greater means available to describe his or her points of view, we would like to explore the possibilities of the architect to be a new kind of public intellectual. |

A case study on the concept of public space in Lebanon
Initiated by Studio Beirut, Archis, Partizan Publik, Pearl and the University of Amsterdam - Center for Conflict Studies. An international multidisciplinary team of international and local students and professionals from the fields of architecture, urban development, design, sociology and political science, shall identify, analyze formally and socially, and propose interventions and new programs for the nearly infinite number of derelict or marginal spaces in Beirut. These terrains vagues, at many scales, from kilometers to centimeters, present a potential for territorial reassessment and cultural redefinition that will constitute a body of both research and action. On the 1st of September on the Pearls in Lebanon event, results will be presented and debated. During Pearls in Lebanon a mixed audience will be brought together for discussion. The platform also gives the opportunity for project presentations of Studio Beirut and its projects to possible Lebanese cooperating partners and investors.
