VOLUME #18: After Zero
Volume is a project by ARCHIS + AMO + C-LAB + ...

Originally a wacko, hippy-esque ideology, ‘sustainability’ – aka ‘eco-friendly’ or ‘green’ – has now become globally accepted. But as what – an environmental urgency, a political issue, a technical problem, a historic destiny, a new world order? And what are the consequences of this acceptance? The sustainability consensus is dangerous since the concept has no political content and can be used for any cause. Carbon neutrality and zero emissions are like magic formulas, cover-ups for complicated ethical questions about the inequalities in our societies. Yet striving for zeros or hiding in neutrality does not lead to a better life in a more desirable house in a superior city for everyone. After Zero is not about design inspired by the fear of tsunamis or Katrinas. Volume proposes an understanding of our society beyond zero. To kick off we discuss two perspectives: sustainability in a post-capitalist city and the potential of urban agriculture.

The situation room
Volume at Colophon 2009

Luxembourg - 13-15 March
Colophon is a biennial symposium for magazine makers, experts, advertisers, readers and creatives involved in the world of the independent magazine.
VOLUME was invited – as one of 10 magazines – to make an exhibition. (Here are the other 9.) Volume contributes 'The Situation Room'. A ‘situation room’ is a place where information is presented during times of crisis in order to make decisions about the course of action. Here Volume's mandate to continuously push the agendas architecture should be concerned with will manifest in an open discourse with the editors and guests.

Archis RSVP # 13 Macomb County
After the Crisis – with Abitare and NAI

Homeowners in Macomb County (MI), one of the suburban counties surrounding Detroit, are hit hard by the current real estate crisis.
ARCHIS in cooperation with Abitare and the Netherlands Architecture Institute organize an RSVP event in Macomb County from 20 – 22 February 2009. Its focus is to find pragmatic answers on how to move from crisis to project. More concretely, by making an inventory of the effects of the crisis we will develop a series of intervention proposals, based on the reality of Macomb County.

The publication will also feature techniques of crisis management that under the current circumstances could either avert or facilitate potential disaster: humanitarian intervention, bricks, Rogue States, sandbags, Obama's Urban Policy Plan, heritage, and lots more.
